Few things make me happier than being with a horse. Horses have taught me many things — most importantly patience, the ability to be totally present and what amazing, beautiful and generous creatures they are.
When I was younger, all I wanted to do was ride. I bought my first horse at age 40 after a lifetime of longing to own one. I soon bought a second horse for my twelve-year-old daughter. I like to think they helped her (and me) through her teen years. Now, thirty years later and retired from an intense, dead-line driven job, I volunteer at a horse sanctuary in Taos, New Mexico (Equine Spirit Sanctuary) several times a week. The director first introduced me to The Masterson Method® bladder meridian technique and I was totally blown away by the horses’ reactions. I used to think energy work was a bit “woo-woo” but seeing is believing and I am now a firm believer.
The Sanctuary in Taos provides various equine assisted service programs, so I decided to pursue my MMES certification in order to help with the programs and be able to train other volunteers in the bladder meridian techniques. I obtained my Levels I and II Reiki certification to enhance and better understand energy practices, and also took the weekend Masterson Method® course and attended one of the “Jim and Mark shows” in Colorado. I get to regularly practice the Masterson techniques on many of the 30+ equines in the Sanctuary’s herd several times a week. I’m not sure who benefits more — them or me.
I love being able to give back to these beautiful animals with my hands and my heart. The connection you make with the horse during this energy work is nothing short of amazing. Sharing my knowledge with other volunteers and program clients, and seeing the benefit to all involved, is a very meaningful part of my life now.
