Hello All,

At Home

Off to a new start this year, and I get to enjoy it at home for a change. The weather has been predictably fickle this year but did throw a couple of mild spells our way that allowed for Annabelle, Jeremiah and me to get out in the buggy, and for them to take me into town for breakfast; me at Everybody’s Café, and them at their hay net tied to the tree at the Amoco station across the street. They’re staying fat and happy this winter, but were happier still to get out. Same goes for me, on all counts.

Annabelle and Jeremiah having breakfast out.

Back home (Notice the vehicle my wife drives, and what I get around in 🤔).

And one more photo taking advantage of the short days and drawn-out sunsets.

What our place would look like if it were in the last scene of “Gone With the Wind”.

Back to Work

All of this at home time doesn’t mean it’s been all vacation this winter. Starting the New Year off with new courses, new horses and improving stuff; being at home is wearing me out!

In the December newsletter I talked about a few of the things that happened in 2018. A big one was the completion of the new Advanced 5-Day Course Manual. I thanked a lot of people for their help in making 2018 a successful year, but forgot to thank Gari Thompson who, apart from helping horses as a long-time MMCP, has helped us over the years as a graphic artist with the lay outs of our training manuals. Her creativity and attention to detail is matched only by her patience and perseverance! It’s taken me three years of back and forth, start and stop, decision-indecision, and not once has she complained or shown one sign of frustration… at least above her breath. Thank you Gari!

Here at ole’ MM we’ve spent a lot of time over the years creating programs, programs within programs, and continually improving the programs we’ve got. What can come out of just a few minds brainstorming, putting things out, trying to catch up to them, making them better, and brainstorming some more, is a substantial curriculum that takes a student from the Weekend Seminar, to an Advanced 5-Day Course, to a solid Field Work and Certification program; all run by a dedicated Education Team of Instructors, Coaches and Mentors around the country and the globe.

We’ll be carrying on renewing and improving with an Education Team Conference in Tucson in February where we’ll be tying all of this even tighter together.

Continuing Education Program – another project that’s been about three years in the making; involving multiple contributors; that’s (finally!) coming together.

This program will be supported in part by educational programs developed by our own MMCPs and Instructors. You can see a sample of some of these courses below.

Lisa Haldane’s Avalon Performance Horse and Rider Support, online courses in Equine Anatomy and Health Considerations, Basic Biomechanics – Understanding Horse Movement and Recognizing Issues That Affect Performance Horses.

Becky Tenges and Tami Elkayam’s Equine Bodyworks Academy International, online and workshop courses in Tack Fit Revealed – Anatomy and Biomechanics of Fit for Comfort, Wellness and Performance.

And a next-level course, Tack Fit: A Study in Applied Anatomy and Biomechanics of Fit; Learning a Process for Assessing Fit and Applied Workshops in Assessing Tack Fit. Learn more here.

Coralie Hughes, co-author of the DVD Dressage Movements Revealed and book The Dressage Horse Optimized, and a Biomechanics for Dressage Riders Workshop.

We’ve also been collaborating with Jochen Schleese and his Saddle Fit 4 Life education program and will be partnering with other experts in fields that support the well-being of the horse as a partner in life and in performance. Stay tuned!

A Couple of International MM Instructors

Speaking of performance, three of our international Instructors are active in keeping port horses fit, fluid, happy and at the top of their potential in FEI Eventing and Show Jumping competitions.

Walter Saxe, our Instructor in Germany competes in eventing himself, and works regularly with FEI Junior Rider Alina Dibowski. Alina is one of Germany’s most successful junior riders in terms of versatility, taking team bronze and seventh in singles at the European Junior Championships in 2018.

Walter and I will be presenting at Equitana in Germany in March, and Walter will be featured in the well-known German equestrian magazine, ST. Georg, including 16 pages about Masterson Method and its effect on sport-horses, and an interview with Alina Dibowski. We’ll have the article in our next newsletter (so brush up on your German : ), but here’s a sneak look.

In South Africa, our Instructors Rob and Chantal Holder are very involved with Show Jumping and the World Cup series of competitions, as well as other disciplines. They also run our courses out of the Masterson Method Academy at the beautiful Steyn City Equestrian Center near Johannesburg and in their “spare time” work with The Society for Animals in Distress in South Africa. We’ll be hearing more about Rob and Chantal in our next newsletter.

Megan Dushin is our Field Work Administrator, and is part of our MMES Team. She’ll be presenting our MM Equine Specialist Program at two upcoming symposiums:

Healing Our Horses: The Masterson Method and Other Bodywork Techniques (with Linda Frease, Hippotherapy Clinical Specialist) at the American Hippotherapy Association 2019 Biennial Conference in Lexington, KY in March, and

Partnering with Horses: The Masterson Method as Interactive Bodywork at the 3rd International Symposium for Equine Welfare and Wellness in Scranton, PA in April.

MMCP Educational Conference in the UK

A reminder, for across-the-pond MMCPs; we’ll be having our Educational Conference for European and UK MMCPs on June 3 and 4 at the Unicorn Equestrian Trust facility in Gloucester, England. We’ll have all of the presenter and registration information for you soon. Keep those dates free!

A Couple of Interesting Articles

Leaving you with a couple of interesting articles to keep you company until next month. One is by Maja Fick, one of our Certification students in Holland, on activating the horse’s nervous system’s ability to release tension. If it comes up in Dutch you’ll have to hit the “translate this page” button, unless you speak Dutch.
Body Work for horses balances the nervous system by Masja Fick

The other is an interview of trainer Manuel Trigo on combining bodywork with classical dressage to create the lightest horse possible.
Classical Dressage and Myofacial Fusion to create the lightest horse possible. Interview with Manuel Trigo

Both interesting and informative articles. Hope you enjoy them, and the rest of what’s going on, below.

And to keep things even lighter, I’ll leave you with Ferdinand the Bull (as I called him) at the Mayfield Barefoot Rehabilitation Center in Yarck, Australia where we held our courses in November, deciding to take a break from his rough schedule while we were working on horses there.

Until next month, like me,

Enjoy your horses!

… and Happy New Year!

Partnering with Horses: The Masterson Method as Interactive Bodywork

About MMES
The Masterson Method Equine Specialist specializes in sharing specific light touch Masterson Method techniques with persons served in equine-assisted learning and therapy programs. By doing this bodywork on horses, participants deepen their connection with horses while also gaining self-awareness and self-regulation skills; meanwhile, therapy horses are tended to through simple bodywork and learn a new way of relating to people. It’s a win/win!

Herd Behavior and Working with Your Own Horse using The Masterson Method

Jim Masterson talks about herd behavior and how it affects doing equine massage on your horse using The Masterson Method®

The Masterson Method® is an innovative form of equine massage that allows the horse to release deep, accumulated pain and tension in muscles and connective tissue. Through the use of light touch and gentle movement in a relaxed state, and observation of a range of the horse’s responses (these visual and palpable responses tell you what the horse’s body is feeling), you’ll open doors to improved health and performance while enhancing communication with your horse.

Learn more techniques in the Beyond Horse Massage Book and DVD.

New Certified Practitioners

Chaja Kolthoff-Voest
Ruinerwold, Netherlands

Her entire life Chaja has been surrounded by horses, and her original dream was to become a veterinarian. Somewhere life intervened and she found herself building up a business in teaching and training horses at the young age of 20. She followed numerous courses and got the opportunity to work with lots of different horses and coaches, resulting in eventually founding an equine educational centre together with her former trainer and then husband. The Freestyle Academy provides in educational courses for instructors, trainers, equine welfare, health and rehabilitation. From the angle of rehabilitation Chaja and her husband work together with a multidisciplinary team of veterinarians, physical therapists, dentists, farriers, saddle fitters and so on to maintain and improve equine welfare and training. In this perspective, Chaja followed many courses herself to extend her knowledge and skills and that’s how she came in touch with The Masterson Method. The techniques provide her with tools to keep her own horses sound and healthy, and to expand this knowledge to her students and the horses she works with. Next to teaching and training she performs in dressage competitions, currently up to Prix St. George level.

Her goal as a practitioner is to listen to horses, discover and release any underlying physical issues to improve performance, and help enhance their sense of well-being. She is currently training as a Masterson Method Equine Specialist to partner with equine-assisted learning and therapy programs to teach clients how to give the gift of bodywork on therapy horses. Megan serves the Greater Twin Cities area and western Wisconsin.
